We are studying Johannes Vermeer this week.
" Johannes Vermeer, was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle class life. Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, and frequently used very expensive pigments. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work." - Visit his wiki page to read more about him.
What are we studying?
In specific we are looking at The Millkmaid, a painting done by him in 1657–1658. Explore this wiki page about the painting here.
You can study composition, perspective, colour, form, drapery and tonal value. If you want to you can pick out just one of these to study.
The idea is as we recreate this work we make observations the artist choose to represent. We get a closer understanding of his approach and process. You can choose to recreate the painting in graphite/paints/crayons. It really depends on how you want to approach this work and what you are studying. For example, composition studies may not be recreating the work in fine detail at all.

Week 01 - Submission by Saturday
At the end of the week submit your work and observations in this post (earlier if you want to start discussing). It could be about your approach, the color family, what about the composition you found interesting and this goes on. This is when we can have discussions and explore more with our studies.
Feel free to pick out any other work of his to study.
Now think of yourself as a art detective and begin the study!

So I decided to do a composition study the moment I saw this. As I noticed the artist is using the play of light to compose.
I hope my notes are readable, please click on it for a larger view. I spent about 30 mins doing this study.
I like the way the Drawing looks in just the 2 colours (small black and white thumbnail in the top row). As you can see the visual is clear even with those two colours. The shapes fill in like the gestalt principal - closure.
